It happened long ago during the days of Elijah. Baal was a god that all the people worshiped including Ahab and Jezebel the wicked king and queen. The people were suffering because it had not rained for so long. Elijah confronted the wicked king and said all these people were suffering because of you. You are serving Baal an ordinary idol who is just a statue and until you serve the living God, there will not be any rain. Ahab became so angry. Elijah said tell all the 450 prophets of Baal to come to Mount Carmel.
When they came, Elijah spoke to all the people including those who worshipped God before but have now turned back and said ‘let us make a deal’. The people were excited when they heard the word ‘deal’. Elijah said he and the worshippers of Baal will put their sacrifice on the altar and the God that answers by fire is the real God. All the people agreed.
The prophets of Baal went first, they put their sacrifice on the altar and began to call on Baal to answer , they called from morning to evening but there was no answer.Elijah made fun of them and said shout louder maybe he is sleeping or maybe he has gone on a journey. The prophets cut themselves with knives and threw themselves on the floor but Baal did not answer.
Are you wondering why Baal did not answer, it is because he is only an idol who cannot see nor hear or talk.
Elijah rebuilt the altar and poured a lot of water on it, he talked to God and said ‘let it be known this day that you are God’. (1 kings 18:36). Immediately fire fell from heaven and licked up all the water and consumed the sacrifice. Everybody was amazed, the prophets of Baal ran away and Elijah told his men to pursue and kill them. After that there was a great rainfall. Elijah’s God is the God that answers by fire and He is the God that we serve in MFM.
