From Ephesians 2:8,9 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so no man can boast” we get the idea that grace is unmerited favour. Our salvation is a gift we receive, not a reward for anything we have done or could have done. Grace then, is power to do that which we could not do by our own ability.
When we look through the Bible we see heroes of faith who started out as ordinary men and women. But they were aware of their own weakness and inability. It was only by allowing God’s grace – His enabling power- to work in their lives that they were able to become the kind of person that God wanted them to be, and to fulfill the plan and purpose God had for their lives. In a similar manner we can never achieve God’s plan and purpose for our lives through our own effort.
We need to ride upon His grace to get there. We miss the true depth of Paul’s confidence when he declares “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” Philipians 4:13. He had the distinct privilege of trying to do God’s will through his own power (as Saul) and later through God’s enablement (as Paul). He saw a clear difference in the two lifestyles. Now he could boldy say that nothing was impossible for him, because he had available to him: God’s unmerited favour. You see, grace is one concept that sets the Christian faith apart from all other religions.
At the core of religion is the idea of earning your way. The Christian faith says that by grace, my way has already been earned. It is for me to accept it.None of us need feel limited in our ability to reach out goal for we have grace available to us. Why don’t you shut your eyes right now and pray “Lord give me grace to go through today”.
If then we believe all we have as Christians is through grace, we dare not look down on anyone, for its not by our power. As but for the grace of God we would be exactly like them. God’s special enablement to achieve….Jesus God’s riches at Christ’s expense
