As a youth growing up in the church, you might be wondering why you need to pray since your parents are praying for you. My dear friend, the secret of success in Christ’s Kingdom is the ability to pray. Prayer is pouring your heart out to God. In the world that we live today we cannot survive without praying. There are too many temptations out there, there is a lot of ungodliness and peer pressure, the only way out is prayer. When you connect to God through prayer, He will have no choice than to reveal Himself to you.
The Bible says in Joel 2:28 ‘And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions’. You are the generation that the church is waiting for, for this promise to be fulfilled you need to pray. God is ready to release His Spirit upon you and give you the gift of prophecy and show you visions? How wonderful it would be if this promise comes to pass in your life.
The question still remains, why do I need to pray? God commands us to pray and it is one of the three pillars upholding the Christian’s life. Jabez was a young lad in the Bible, he was born to fail and his name confirmed it. His mother went through a lot of agony and believed that her son will be a failure. Jabez considered himself to be a failure because he was born in sorrow, his life was upside down and full of shame and he was suffering.
What do young people do nowadays when life does not go the way they want? They take to drugs, immorality, occultism, violence, stealing, drinking, overeating, ungodly partying, nightclubs etc. This was not the approach taken by Jabez. Other youths might address the situation in a different way by blaming themselves and justifying why they should take the blame all due to ignorance.
Jabez took the right step by deciding that he would not die as a failure, your future is in your hands and you can decide as Jabez did and pray to God.
In 1 Chronicles 4:10, we read: “And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that Thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that Thine hand might be with me, and that Thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.”
The prayer is composed of four parts. First, Jabez asked the God of Israel to bless him. That is the God we serve, the blessing of God is the unlimited goodness that only God has the power to give us. Secondly, he asks God to enlarge his territory or increase his responsibility, which means to move him from minimum to maximum. Thirdly, he prays that God will be with him and stay close. God has promised that He will never leave you nor forsake you. Lastly, Jabez asks that God keep him from harm so that he will be free from pain. Whatever pain you are going through God is able to heal you and take away the pain permanently.
The bible makes it clear that God answered the prayer of Jabez. Our God changes dryness to freshness, emptiness to fullness, sadness to gladness and bad luck to good luck. The God of Jabez is still the same God, he can do to you more than He did for Jabez. He loves you and He wants you to fulfil your destiny. All you need to do is to surrender all to Jesus, walk closely with God as Jabez did. Stand firmly on the promises of God, continue to pray and wait for the answer, even when it is delayed knowing that victory is sure.
You can pray for everything including: Salvation, when you feel tempted, when you need a sense of purpose, when you have thoughts of suicide. Pray for your family, guidance and friends. God is waiting to hear from you the lines are permanently open the dial tone is Jesus Christ.
